Petition Update: Cold Temperatures, But Shelter Remains Closed Tonight

Thank you for your continued support as we fight for consistent shelter operations in Whatcom County. As of 4:53PM, the temperature in Bellingham is 35°F and falling—just one degree warmer than last night’s low when the shelter was open. Yet, tonight, the shelter is closed indefinitely, with no new openings announced.

Why This is Dangerous

1. Freezing Temperatures Pose Serious Risks:

• At 35°F, especially with wind chill and wet conditions, hypothermia remains a significant danger.

• The shelter’s closure tonight leaves vulnerable individuals without a safe place to escape the cold.

2. Inconsistent Policies Erode Trust:

• Last night, the shelter opened at 38°F, demonstrating an understanding that temperatures above 32°F are dangerous. So why is it closed tonight under nearly identical conditions?

• Unpredictable shelter operations make it impossible for unhoused individuals to rely on this resource or plan for their safety.

3. Forecasted Cold Conditions Continue:

• The forecast for the rest of the week predicts continued lows near 38°F. Without announcements of additional shelter openings, this inconsistent policy leaves people exposed night after night.

What Needs to Change

1. Raise the Threshold to 40°F:

• A consistent policy opening shelters below 40°F, including wind chill, would ensure no one is left exposed during dangerously cold weather.

2. Commit to Proactive Announcements:

• The county must commit to announcing shelter operations in advance, particularly during stretches of sustained cold weather.

3. Rebuild Trust with the Community:

• Consistent operations and clear communication will help rebuild trust with unhoused individuals and the outreach teams working to connect them with resources.

This is a Preventable Tragedy

The current policy is failing those most in need. By closing tonight under freezing conditions, the county is demonstrating why a higher temperature threshold and a commitment to consistency are critical. Lives are on the line, and we must act now to ensure no one is left to face the cold alone.
